at Parsons School of Design. It is a summation of acquired knowledge over the last four years of being in a Western design school. This thesis takes my philosophy of design and craft and acts as a representation of it. From how someone may interact with the chair to the historical references, bodies that I have lived next to, and my tools that are in the tradition of&nbsp; Eastern Asian Craft. The chair’s material composition is maple offcuts from an Amish sawmill in Pennsylvania. Handmade knit upholstery by Emma Cali and hand-woven textile from Sou Sou, Japan. It allows for someone to form a ritual and respect for an object’s material consumption. A design that allows the object to be repaired for generations. The upholstery is easily removable, to be cleaned, repaired, or interchanged with different textiles that are meant to tell different stories. However, this thesis was not only intended to create function alone, rather to embark on telling the story of process,&nbsp; decolonizing and deindustrializing at every step of its process. In the study of how bodies like to sit instead of how they are “supposed” to sit. The qualitative and quantative research that comes ou of this study will dictate a formulated understadning of what a seat mean&nbsp;to the people that have been measured, demonstrating the necessary step in telling the story of making an objects. this proposal extends the construction of shared knowledge; can a “book” be a joining of many pre existing, individual, interrelated texts and publications?&nbsp; How do communities share knowledge in margin notes of physical books? How can a bench be a library? In reference to my approach to reading, due to my dyslexia, the pursuit of knowledge through words was discouraging and exhausting. Thus, I became accustomed to reading just the notes in books borrowed from the library, or lent to me by classmates and friends. These abbreviated thoughts were more accessible than the intimidating and singular text fonts of books. This proposal becomes not only a communal space to share&nbsp; new thoughts and resources with loved ones. practice and process of traditional. Japanese lantern making, and the ideologies and philosophies of Noguchi’s Akari lamps.In consideration of the interaction of the objects that surround the lamp, the lamp investigates the intersection between its base and the surface it lives on. In the application of my own practice and material sensibilities, the forms shown in are my own embodiment of Noguchi’s philosophy: moments of intersections in translation. Traditionally the lamps are made with wooden internal structures, however, due to the constraints of the projects prompt, it was required to be made of cardboard. My preliminary prototype was made with cardboard, honoring the prompt through process. A singular drilled hole with a slotted curved wooden dowel acts as the weight for the lamp. Three rocks with two holes drilled in each, combined with three wooden dowels swelled in place. In looking at the variety of practices, from machinist to crafts person, the overlap of different types of practices creates a more profound knowledge of the body in relation to making objects. Understanding how materials move differently as they exist in different states, in both their conservation and degradation, allows for a precise honing of practice. The study of construction and representation is to recognize the practice and the involvement of the people and their working knowledge within the making of objects. Thus, what would it take to turn a rock into a sheet of metal? What is the weight, metaphysical and physical, of the table when joining the raw material with the industrial one?
